Common types of
property extensions
There are several types of property extensions and loft conversions. The one we recommend for you will depend on a number of factors including property style, roof height, available space, planning regulations and budget.
SIDE EXTENSION
Generally involves building out 1.25m to the side of the property and finishing flush at the back of the main part of the house. Clients can then choose to have either a pitched or flat roof.
REAR EXTENSION
Where the end of the property is extended to approximately 5m x 3m (STPP) and can include huge roof windows to allow maximum natural light into the newly created space.
L-SHAPE EXTENSION
Involves building an extension to the side and rear of the property, sometimes extending 3 to 4 meters into the garden. This creates a huge kitchen diner living space for the family.
DORMER
The most common type of loft conversion, which involves an extension to the existing roof that projects vertically with a sloping roof, creating additional floor space and headroom.
Velux
The roofline is unaltered, as the velux windows are installed fitting flush to the footline, leaving the original roof structure untouched. Planning permission is not generally required for this project.
HIP TO GABLE
This type of conversion involves changing the sloping side of the property to a flat gable end. This increases the size of the loft space, often creating extra space for the staircase.
